Don’t Get Comfortable, Embrace Changes !!

Not getting comfortable

One important thing in life is ‘Change’. It is also the only constant thing in life.

When I was in school, I read a poem. I forgot the exact poem but I remember the meaning; it said that when a water-body is stagnant, algae and moss take over it and the water becomes unclean, unusable.

On the other hand, the river that flows, gives us clean water.

What’s the link between consistency and comfortability?

When you are constant, and living in your comfort zone, you are getting rusty.

Now, you might try to screw me by saying that in the last chapter I told you that you need to be consistent.

Right, I told you to be consistent. But I also told you to try out different processes. And consistency does not mean you are stagnant. I told you to improve 1% daily to achieve the same vision.

do I need to get comfort

Why can you actually never be comfortable for the long-term?

The actual truth is, even if you find a consistent way and achieve growth, that WILL BE TEMPORARY. You MUST change the way at some point of time. This is because trends change with time.

A good example can be the YouTube algorithm. 3-4 years ago, a lot of tech channels emerged on the platform and YouTube suggested phone reviews, tech reviews, software tutorials to everyone.

Those youtubers’ followers, revenue, profit kept increasing. Some people also misused this trend to mislead people.

avoid comfort

But now, the algorithm has changed based on people’s choice. The old tech channels hardly get any views now. The so-called tech-gurus are struggling to find new topics that will help them rank again.

The trend has changed, and it will keep changing based on people’s choice.

When I started going to gym in 2018, I started with maybe 10 kgs of dumbbells (5+5). Then covid hit and gyms closed in 2020. At that time, I was using 16 kgs (8+8), deadlifting with 55 kgs and doing leg-press with 70-80 kgs.

I levelled up that game. To let you know, I am light-weight, under 55 kgs and if I continued, I would have tried to increase the weight more.

comfortable

So, you need to accept this. Even if you are consistent with your goals, you need to change the ways from time to time to get better results.

How to NOT get comfortable?

One way to not get comfortable is to know that you are miserable.

There are new trends these days…. People claiming that have apathy towards success, they are influenced by the principles of Stoicism when it comes to self-improvement etc etc. Well, if you are apathetic about it, you are pathetic. Slap yourself.

embraces change, don't get comfortable

How can you not seek improvement? How can you not ask for more from life? Ask yourself.

One simple way to not get comfortable is to be angry. Be angry at yourself. Don’t blame it on others, don’t blame it on GOD at all. Rather, be happy for others’ success and take inspiration from them. Have faith in God.

pressure and comfort

Comfort is the enemy of pressure

Pressure is the opposite of comfort.

Without pressure, coal does not turn into diamond.

Without beating, raw metals don’t get shaped.

Without pressure, you won’t achieve success.

Pressure can be of any form- it can be your mother nagging you to get a better job.

It can be your husband asking for better sexual actions at night.

It can be your boss demanding you to clear a certification so that you both can get promotions.

It can be your audience asking you to upload contents more frequently on your social media.

In all these cases, you are asked to get out of your comfort zones.

Why do people ask you to be comfortable?

Actually, only your enemies will ask you to be comfortable with life. They want to see you sit on your hands, lose everything and be miserable.

And they are right on their point. They are not supposed to make you a success blueprint. You should identify and engage enmity. Lord Rama is respected because he had an enemy like Raavan.

ramayana

Another category of people who will ask you to stay comfortable with life are people who themselves could not achieve much. Their lives are stagnant and their world is similar to the frog that lives inside a well. When that frog looks up, it sees a tiny piece of sky and assumes that that is the whole world.

Theory of abundance

You need to get out of your comfort zone.

Because only then you can achieve a success mindset,

Only then you will know that life can give you anything, unlimitedly.

This is called the theory of ABUNDANCE. I will tell more about this in the next chapters.

theory of abundance

Be it love, success or money, you can get it unlimitedly; and you need to believe that.

Get angry at yourself. Look at someone successful and tell yourself “Why am I not successful like that person”

“Why don’t I have a jacuzzi?”

“Why don’t I have a castle?

“Why doesn’t my business have 1 trillion $ in my bank like that other company?”

When you ask yourself, you will get the possible answer. Because you know yourself better than others. Later, I will tell you how you can channel anger.

As per Japanese folklore, a person has 3 faces. One for strangers, one for dear ones, one for oneself.

You, yourself, know the reasons. And you can change the scenario too.

How can you get motivated to not get comfortable?

Sometimes, you will get the initial inspirations from external sources too… your family, lover, so-called relatives, friends in disguise or even strangers. You need to work on that rather than avoiding it.

If you ask questions to yourself about how to improve your situation, you will get at least some hints or the full answer.

The reason why you know answers to those ‘how and why’ is because you are a tiny god.

You are a part of the almighty. God can do anything. You can do a lot of things too; you just don’t know it.

WAKE UP…. From your comfort zone.

how to not get comfortable

Sometimes, you need to look back to get motivation. No matter how bad your life has been, you must have had some positive moments.

You know how success tastes. Stand up once again to taste it again.

Check out my list of- 31 things to try when you are trying to get out of comfort zone

Why does trying out new things work?

Trying out new things boosts your adrenaline and makes you more confident. As per psychologist Jordan Peterson, for men, it increases testosterone.

Basically, when you take a small step and win, your chance to win the next step increases.

In some cases, the result might be failure. But it does not matter. You completed a challenge, you learned from it- that matters the most. The next time you try the same challenge, you know what not to do.don't get comfortable

Once I danced inside a bus full of people. It was not a full-fledged bus but there was music playing outside and I liked the music. So, I danced a little. Girls laughed, I blushed. Nothing much.

“Do your duty without thinking about the result”- Sri Krishna, The Bhagavad Geeta.

Consistency: How to be Consistent?

Why is consistency important?

Are you talented?

Do you work hard?

Even if you say ‘yes’ to those two above questions, you will fail without consistency.

Even if you say ‘no’ to those above questions, you will succeed with consistency.

Hard work beats talent. And consistency beats hard work.

I once came across a post on social media; it said `If you improve yourself 1% each day, at the end of the year, you will be 365% better than you were on day 1’.

The point is, consistent development works as miracles.

consistency

Consistency makes you attractive

I often ask people if they are talented; they say ‘no’. But they are also not willing to improve. They might start working after being motivated, and they might start with enthusiasm, but they often lose that mindset. From the previous chapter, you now know that when you have genuine interest in something, you will be self-motivated to achieve your goals.

An example of consistency is Master-Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin and Vinod Kambli were both students of coach Ramakant Achrekar. Kambli is considered to be more talented than Sachin. But he lacked discipline. Sachin practised, practised and practised. He learned sustainably.

consistency

I got my first job in 2016 in Ericsson. I had a hard time understanding the tasks given to me. I struggled daily. My manager was not very fond of me. But one day, he told me something useful. “You have to practise until you forget”.

I was too dumb to understand that at that time. Maybe now I can interpret it. When you practise, you improve yourself. The chance of you making an error keeps reducing. But you should not be too proud about it and stop practising, because then you will forget it.

consistent

There are thousands of examples to prove that when you stop practising, you lose skills. A simple example can be gym. You start working out, lose fat, get shredded, then stop going to gym, enjoy life. After a few months, you feel that those abs are not looking the same as before. Your girlfriend compliments your blooming man-boobs saying they are ‘cute’. You lost that achievement when you stopped working out.

Be consistent with your destination, but feel free to change the path

Sometimes, it happens that you are not getting enough results even after being consistent. In that case, you need to change the process. Suppose you are doing social media marketing; you start with posting regularly on social media. A few followers visit and like your posts; not much improvements. You research and input better quality pictures, music and contents. If that does not work, you can try backlinking, showing ads, engaging with others to increase your chance to get more likes.

Here, you are being consistent with social media posting. You are passionate about becoming an influencer. Just, the process you are trying with, is changing. And that is ok. Consistent development towards the vision WILL give you success.

Toyota is a famous car manufacturer. They have two major principles. The first one is respecting people and the second one is ‘KAIZEN’. Kaizen means ’continuous improvement’ and Toyota uses it to improve the product quality, believing that that is always a better way.

Using this philosophy, Toyota improved its efficiency. They can assemble a car in under 3 minutes.

When you are consistent, you are more likely to do hard work easily. It basically means, when you are consistent, you become a smart worker. You build up routines and things which you thought to be harder before, you become fluent in those now.

When you are consistent, you don’t give excuses. You put your routine first. Humans are slave of routines, once you create your routine, it will be harder for you to change it. Think of it like sticking to your favourite brand. The routine becomes your favourite brand.

To start habits, you have to make commitments. Make a promise to someone you love. It can be yourself, your family or God too. And then don’t turn back from that promise.

And if you stop for some reason, restart. No one will tell you anything. Only your inner-self will tell you “Maybe you should not have stopped”. Take it as self-motivation.

When you make a routine, you also get out of your comfort zone. After some time, the routine becomes your comfort zone. Make sure that the routine is adding to your development.

How long does it take to be consistent?

Consistency is a journey. Not a destination.

It is said that if you do the same thing for 30 days, it will become a habit. It was 21 days previously, but new research says that you should do it for 30 days. Some researchers also say that it should be done for 66 days.

And it is ok to take breaks, but that break should not be too long. Otherwise, you will become too comfortable.

How long does it take to break consistency?

When you are doing something regularly, you are actually programming your brain. When you stop doing that for more than 3 days, your brain will start reverse programming and that gained cognition will atrophy.

Seriousness and sincerity- How to be sincere?

Seriousness and sincerity

You are valued when you take up something and don’t give up on it. It can be your business idea, your relationships, your choice of dress for today’s party.

What’s the difference between seriousness and sincerity?

Sincerity and seriousness are two different things. Sincerity is when you do something with genuine enthusiasm, caution and awareness. Seriousness might indicate giving extra attention to something and that might make you non-spontaneous and reduce your creativity. So, maintain a balance.

sincere serious sincerity seriousness

When you are serious and sincere, you concentrate more. Your mind gets less diverted. And in the last chapter, I already told you, when you do something with concentration, it gets done faster. It also gets done with less error (in most cases).

I have too many life stories where I am not serious and sincere. Major cases and minor cases. Once, my mother went to the laundry to give some clothes for dry cleaning. But the shop was closed, so she came back home and while returning, she also bought some mangoes.

After she came back, she asked me to get the mangoes out because the mangoes’ gum may ruin the clothes. I casually opened the bag, but did not see any mangoes… because they were under the clothes. And I just left the bag there, and did not care much about asking ‘where are those mangoes’ or simply checking under the clothes.

A couple days after, mother found out about the scene, the clothes were stained with gum and she was furious. I got a heavy scolding. She still nags me till date by saying I am never serious.

Sincerity is backed by awareness. What does a sincere student mean- someone who genuinely completes his lessons. Someone who is genuinely cautious about studying. Focus on the word- ‘genuine’ that I mentioned here; it is important.

seriousness and sincerity

Sincere apologies- is a popular phrase and it means genuine apologies, nothing fake. When you are sincere, you are not faking it.

Seriousness means emphasised sincerity and it might be overwhelming at times. It may make you obnoxious as well. But that is good at times. When you are obnoxiously serious about something good, you will do anything to achieve it.

Agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho … to poori kainath use tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai” – [“If you want something from your heart, then whole universe gets engaged to let you meet with that”- I guess Paulo Coelho said something like this in The Alchemist]

A good example can be finding your crush’s social media account. Your eyes will be glued to the mobile and your mother will come and say “If you were this serious about your studies, you would top in exams”. (I haven’t done this; I just gave an example).

seriousness and sincerity

I am writing this chapter sincerely, but not with too much seriousness. I am simply enthusiastic and spontaneous to make you understand with simple examples so that you can relate.

I am serious about making a good quality article. But also, I am adding things I have experienced in my life.

When is seriousness toxic?

On the other hand, there is toxic seriousness as well…. Do you remember that Hindi movie named ‘Darr’… the protagonist (or antagonist?) was too serious about the girl.

In a relationship, when you are too serious, you will become a control freak. In a relationship, you need to give each other personal space. Or else there will be suffocation.

seriousness and sincerity

When you are too serious, it cages you …. Maybe it will give you something but may snatch some other things too. Be cautious.

You should be sincere, aware, genuinely interested to achieve something and spontaneous. When you are sincere, you will use time and money wisely and efficiently.

How to be a sincere person?

Sincere people are not told to do things, they take up responsibilities themselves.

If you are a good listener, you can be a sincere person. Often, the person you listen to- defines your sincerity. You may ignore one person and not listen and as a result, that person will not look up to you as a sincere person.

You might value another person more and listen to that person with more enthusiasm, then you will become sincere for that person.

seriousness and sincerity

You can be serious too, but within limits.

Some examples of limits can be- the effect of the seriousness on your health, relationships, mental state.

What’s the relationship between seriousness and passion?

Elon Musk says that he has worked for 22 hours, but it hurts his mind, brain and body. Though he has achieved many things, he often tells how he would not choose to be himself if given a chance. But, anyway, he chose to be serious with his work, to fulfil the purposes he has.

Also, he does not do things to get people to praise him. He does those to make himself satisfied. Doing good things without expecting to be rewarded- is a sign of sincerity.

seriousness and sincerity and passion

Another example can be Ratan Tata. He did not buy Air India to get praised. He has genuine interest in that airline due to emotional family reasons. JRD Tata had to let that brainchild go, as the Nehru government mandated the airlines to be centralised for the government’s profit.

Then, due to the government’s lack of management ability, the profitability of Air India kept reducing and there were too many debts. Ratan Tata bought the company along with all those debts.

It means that he has to pay for the errors done by other inefficient people. He chose this for genuine self-satisfaction, not for getting praised. This has another definition— Passion.

Dr. Kalam once said “Dream is not something you see while sleeping, it is something that does not let you sleep”

It is true.

seriousness and sincerity

Sincerity and controlled seriousness give you a success mindset, a vision and self-confidence that- you CAN do it. You don’t need anyone’s approval after that. You will be simply driven by your passion.

Just choose a passion that is fruitful and meaningful. Then grind.

Learnability- How can you actually LEARN?

Learnability- How to LEARN

Before you learn, you need to learn how to learn.

Learnability = The Ability to Learn

Maybe you are studying in school or college, or you are working.

Do you know the purpose of schools? Is it to mug up topics, compete with friends or get good marks?

NONE of these!!

Learn Learnability Learning

What is the purpose of learning?

The purpose of the schooling system is to actually teach you how to LEARN…. How to be a lifelong learner

But due to lack of proper guidance or knowledge of the authorities, that message is not passed onto the generations.

Don’t assume that I knew all these when I was in school or college. I was just running behind marks, I guess. I have learned more from the internet than textbooks.

Honestly, my decision to go for an international MBA will remain as my worst life-decision. I wasted my time, effort and money. So I hardly recommend people to go for a masters degree and I always tell them the disadvantages.

However, different people experience things differently, you may have a better experience than I had. It is true that many people lack practical knowledge. In the 21st century, learning has become easier more than ever, thanks to the internet.

Learnability, how can I learn something easily

Why do we learn what we learn?

Some of you study all year-long, some of you study before the exam nights. The results vary sometimes, other times the results are the same. But have you ever thought about how we learn? What is the process of learning? Why are you forced to learn?

In India, you are taught to learn to get marks and pass the exams— to say politely, this is the shittiest purpose of any major system. Not only in India, the same thing persists in many other countries.

What is the reason for such a system??… are you being prepared to NOT think critically or are you to blame yourself for not being able to crack the code?

Learnability, how can I learn something easily

In the traditional education and social system, they don’t teach you for your benefits. They teach you to remain a slave. Just think once- what type of advice they give you- study hard, get an education loan, get into college, get a job, repay the education loan, then get a mortgage to build a house, then pay that loan for 20 years.

You have to pay bills, taxes and everything from your money. If you are working hard to only make others rich, and you don’t have any issue with that- then YOU are the issue for yourself.

and often, the people who say ‘if you study in college and get a job in MNC, you will be settled and rich’- they are victims of poverty. It is like that frog that stays inside a well and looks up and can only see a little piece of the sky and thinks ‘this is the limited world’. Don’t trust blindly.

DON’T take advice about money from poor people. Learn from bonafide people, ask questions to yourself and whatever you have learned in your life. Wake up to get out of the matrix!!

Learnability, how can someone learn something easily

I once took a coaching for IES (Indian Engineering Services) and in that coaching, one teacher told us the purpose of reading history…. Can you guess the reason why history is included in your syllabus? From history, we learn the mistakes that have been done before; so that the same mistakes are not repeated again.

It is about the concepts. I don’t consider myself as a good learner from this viewpoint.

Often in life you will learn real knowledge late, but it’s ok. Keep learning. Learn a way to use that knowledge for your benefit, for everyone’s benefit. I am trying to be a better learner.

Learnability, how can I learn something easily

How to learn efficiently?

The best way to learn is to admit that you don’t know. Let yourself feel like an idiot while learning. Ask someone who knows, there is no shame in it. Rather it makes you attractive.

If you don’t know something, you will try to justify something with a biased mentality.

And then you will probably fail. This is why businesses perform market testing to know the needs, demands and reality of the consumers. Then they fool-proof their plan to achieve success. Though market tests are not perfect, it gives the right direction.

Learnability, how to learn something easily

A simple example is that I am generally repelled by detective stories. When I was quite young, I read a few detective stories and did not like the suspense and slow grinding.

I have developed a dislike since then and I developed a bias that all detective stories are boring, based on only a few stories which I did not understand when I was in primary school. But then a few years ago, I read ‘Byomkesh’ by Sharadindu Bandyopadhayay.

It is one of the top detective stories available in Bengali language and many movies and series have been produced based on the stories. I quite liked reading it as I was more mature than when I was in primary school.

But still, I would prefer other genres to detective stories and the bias remains that unless the author is renowned, the stories will definitely be boring. Which is most probably wrong to conclude.

Learnability, how can I learn something easily

How can learning increase success rate?

Bill Gates dropped out of university to work on Microsoft. But before that he did a good amount of market research to be sure that he will earn profit from that and the Microsoft products will be in demand.

Learnability, how can you learn something easily

You might have heard advice like- “don’t leave your job to work on your start-ups until your start-up can cover your expenses”; this is partially true but you have to analyse critically. Multiple income sources are required to make money. Risk-aversion and calculated risk-taking will help you to get mental peace and confidence. So, if you know more and learn more, you can tackle risks better.

The best learners do not have pride

If you are an adult, you might be too proud to learn new things. Pride is harmful, it will make you look foolish unless you have a good personality. And even if you have a good personality, you will remain a fool cloaked by just the personality. It is better for you to keep your pride in your pocket and keep learning.

There are 4 types of people in the world-

  1. The ones who don’t know that they don’t know- they are called ‘fools’
  2. The ones who don’t know that they know- they are dormant
  3. The ones who know that they don’t know- they are simple
  4. The ones who know that they know- they are called ‘wise’

You need to ask yourself which one you are and then set a goal to reach the last type mentioned above.

Learnability, how can you learn something easily

What’s the secret to learn faster- Secret 1

Some factors to know your ‘learnability’ is to know how fast and how easily you can learn something. Swami Vivekananda is an Indian spirituality, who’s birthday is celebrated as the World Youth Day (12th January). Swamiji could just turn 700 pages and learn within a few seconds.

Learnability, how can I learn

700 pages!! At one go!!! …… I can’t even remember 1 page properly when I read textbooks (not that I would really really want to)

The secret is to have a focused mind and concentration. When you are learning anything…. Be it your calculus or be it how to tie your shoelaces, you need to focus. The more you focus, the faster you will learn.

How can learning help you in daily life?

Learnability will help you in any place of your life. In your office, your boss needs you to learn things fast, so that you can perform and contribute to the company’s development.

In businesses, they are integrating machine learning technologies because they learn faster and contribute without error. If you keep asking your boss to check your work every time and he finds errors in that, the trustworthiness reduces, Next time, he may hesitate to give you responsibility and this makes you more replaceable.

Your partner wants you to learn what she likes and dislikes, so that you bring gifts he or she will like. If you don’t learn, you will have a fight. Learning about others’ nature, helps you to manipulate and persuade them. As you learn more, your awareness increases. It can also be that you learned by getting pain- even that is a type of learning that builds your personality.

What’s the secret to learn faster- Secret 2

First principle method is the best way to learn something. It says that in order to understand something truly, you have to understand the fundamental things in it.

Learnability, how to learn

As an example, I once tried to understand how Lithium-ion batteries are manufactured. For that I broke down the components of a battery- metal body, cathode, anode, electrolytes, lithium, separator film, insulator film etc.

Then I tried to find out the materials of these items- like Anode can be made of graphite or graphene, a form of carbon. Cathode can be oxides of Lithium. By doing this, I understood the manufacturing process to some extent.

From a business perspective, you can break down an element like this and identify the costs of each separate element. And as you know, when you manufacture things, the manufacturing cost is much less than the cost of the ultimate product’s cost.

This is how Elon Musk bought raw materials directly and manufactured batteries to reduce the cost of EVs.

Learnability, how to learn

Puri Tour and visit to the Jagannath Temple

Introduction:

Jai Jagannath

If you are a Bengali Indian and you have not visited Puri, then it is actually pathetic.

Puri, in Orissa, the neighbor state of West Bengal, is probably the most visited tourist spot for most Bengalis. As a Bengali myself, I enjoy the Puri beach a lot.

Recently I visited Puri and this blog is about my visit to the Puri beach and the Jagannath temple. You will find necessary tour guidelines in my blog and if you are planning to visit Puri, you can use my blog as a guide.

Entering Puri:

Train is the most popular mode of transportation if you want to go to Puri from West Bengal. There are many trains that depart from the Howrah Station. It takes a night to reach the Puri station.

Another useful transportation mode is the airplane. You can go directly from Kolkata airport to Bhubaneshwar airport. It takes around 2-3 hours.

We went by flight and stayed for a very small period of 2 nights. Our purpose was to visit the Jagannath temple and give puja.

We started on a Friday noon and reached the Bhubaneshwar airport by afternoon. Then we took an auto from the airport.

One thing to note here, the Puri Beach is almost 5 hours journey from the airport. You will get auto-rickshaw or taxi from the airport. If you want, you can pre-book a cab for convenience. The journey can be pretty boring.

If you are travelling by train, you can directly go to Puri station and this is near the Puri beach.

We reached the Puri beach around 9 pm and it was actually pretty hard to get a place to stay at that time.

A lot of Bengalis visit Puri during summer break or when the kids’ school tests are over. So it is hard to get a room without pre-booking. Usually, this happens during March-April.

During Rath Yatra (chariot festival) also, a lot of devotees visit Puri to celebrate. It happens around June or July.

Another tourist season is during the Durga Puja around September-October. This is when many Bengalis get a long break and they like to enjoy at Puri.

So, to avoid hassle, you should either choose an off-season time to visit or you can also pre-book hotels. Usually, most hotels have online booking system and you can book 3-months prior.

Anyway, somehow, we got a good room after wandering for more than an hour. There are many restaurants around the locality. The restaurants serve Bengali cuisine simply because the huge number of Bengali tourists there.

We had some food and took rest because next morning, we were to visit the Jagannath temple.

The Jagannath Temple: some mysteries

The Jagannath temple is one of the greatest architecture in India. It has very high historical and spiritual value.

In this blog, I am not mentioning the actual architecture or the history. But feel free to explore by yourself.

You will find many stories about how the Jagannath temple. I can’t resist mentioning a few I remember.

It is said that when you enter the main gate of the temple, you cannot hear any outside noise.

Then, another interesting thing is the flag of the temple. Everyday, a 12-year boy climbs the temple and change the flag with new piece of clothes.

Puri: A man installs a religious flag on top of the Jagannath Temple #Gallery - Social News XYZ

There is a story about a queen of the royal family that built the temple. She used to grab the flag while dipping in the sea (Indian ocean) to not float away. The flag was that much long!! Also, the ocean was much closer before.

The Rath Yatra (chariot festival) is the biggest festival in Puri. Hundreds of thousands of people gather in the city to celebrate. During Covid Lockdown, there were a lot of restrictions and only the insiders were allowed to attend the festival.

Chariots of Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra

There is another interesting thing called the ‘Naba-Kalebar’, which has a greater spiritual explanation. After every 12 years, the idols of the gods- Shri Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra- change their physical forms.

The idols are made with wood and there are many rules that are followed to create the idols.

When the time comes, the head worshipper of the temple gets dreams about how to get the wood. Sometimes, the woods also come floating in the ocean!! Exciting, isn’t it?

Also, after the idols are created, a very secret ritual is performed. The ritual is like this- there will be the old idols and the new idols inside the main temple. And there will be 3 worshippers with their eyes blindfolded. During this ritual, the whole city is put under blackout. The street lights are turned off and the lights inside the temples are also turned off.

As told by one worshipper who told about his experience during that ritual- there is a secret chamber inside the idols. That chamber is opened and one worshipper extends his hand inside the old idol and takes out an element.

Then, another worshipper takes that element from his hand and gives it to the third worshipper beside him. The third worshipper would put that element inside the secret chamber of the new idol.

The person shared his experience that, that element in his hands felt like a rabbit- warm and soft. And it was beating like a heart. The reason of blindfold is that, no one is allowed to see it.

Don’t ask me much, just believe. Too much scientific mind is making you dumb.

One interesting thing is that, Sri Krishna’s heart did not get burnt after his departure. This living element is probably Krishna’s heart.

Another interesting thing in the temple is how the food is cooked. The food is cooked in earthen pots. And these pots are of different sizes. The pouts are kept in such manner one above another that the biggest one is the lower most layer and the smallest one is the top most. But interestingly, the topmost pot gets cooked the first.

There are such many mysteries and stories about the temple, I can’t finish telling all those at once. So, I will just continue with our visit to the temple.

Our visit to the Jagannath temple:

The hotels usually have connections with the worshippers and If you ask them, they will contact the temple-insiders to let you give special puja in the temple. We asked for this and the arrangement was made. The temple-insiders are locally known as Panda (not those cute fat animals, These Puri Pandas are simple humans).

So, the next day was Saturday and we woke up around 5:00 am and got ready. The panda was waiting for us and we set off to visit the temple. We took a rickshaw and it took about 20 mins to reach the temple.

One thing to note is, the Jagannath temple does not allow non-Hindus to enter the temple. The devotees are asked to wear proper dresses. Mobiles and shoes are not allowed inside. It is recommended to keep your shoes inside a shop and shops also have provisions for this.

After this, you may have to stand in a queue to enter the temple through the main gate ‘Singha Duar’ (Singha means Lion in English). It usually does not have more than 5-10 minutes to enter the gate if you visit in morning.

After you enter the main gate, there will be some small temples at the left side, As far I remember, those are of lord Hanuman. Pay your regards there.

Then, you have to climb stairs. After that, you will have to stand in another queue to enter the main temple. Also, this does not take too much time if you visit in the morning.

The inside of the temple is full of designs, statues and scriptures. As you enter the main temple, you will find a pillar, above which, Garuda is sitting and looking at Lord Jagannath inside the Innermost sanctorum of the temple. You can pay your regards to Garuda.

Then, you can enter the main sanctorum (garva-griha). There are police inside the temple to maintain flow of crowd.

As you enter the main sanctorum, you can see the idols of Jagannath, Balaram, Subhadra about 50-70 meters away inside another ultimate sanctorum.

This Last sanctorum was open to visitors before but after terrorist attacks increased in the last decade, they decided to not let people enter. Otherwise, earlier, we would enter this ultimate sanctorum and revolve the idols and touch it. When I was very young, my parents have experienced this. I don’t really remember much.

Please note that, taking photographs inside is prohibited and if you do this, your camera or phone will be confiscated by the police or worshippers. Anyway, you should focus on paying your regards to the gods, rather than taking pictures.

Inside the main sanctorum, worshippers will come to you and ask for money. It is up to you if you want to donate. I would recommend that you donate to the worshippers who are inside the ultimate sanctorum. They will surely be there with some pots where you can donate money and flowers.

Due to heavy crowd, it is a bit hard to reach near the ultimate sanctorum, but you will surely reach there slowly. The police does not let people stand for too long in front of the ultimate sanctorum. So, as you move forward, keep seeing the idols of Lord Jagannath, Subhadra and Balaram.

Keep looking at them with love and respect. Lose yourself inside the large eyes of the lord.

If you get chance, take blessings from the pradeep/dia lights. I don’t know the correct word but it looks like this. You will find it in front of the ultimate sanctorum with the worshippers.

Another important thing is that, the main sanctorum stays open in the morning and then it closes. So, if you are late, you might not be able to enter the main sanctorum and you have to see from outside.

So you should try to visit in the morning.

After paying your regards to the gods, you can come out of the main temple. If you want the ‘prasad’ (food cooked for god) after worshipping is done, you have to tell any panda and they will take your name, address (hotel you are staying). And you have to pay some amount to them. You can also request them to give you some flowers devoted to the gods. They will arrange it.

After paying our regards, we came out and asked for the ‘prasad’. then, our panda gave us a small tour around the temple. There are many small temples of Laxmi, Narayana, Ganesha, Gayatri and other gods.

You can also lit candles and put it in in specific places of the temple premise.

There is also a place where you can make some rituals. It is like making deals with the god. If you want something from god, you can make some promise that you won’t eat certain fruit for a year and you have to pay a certain amount and create a deal. This is called ‘Maanat’ and if you want, you can ask a panda to guide you.

After seeing around, we bid goodbye to the panda. He said that he will visit our hotel with the ‘prasad’ in the afternoon. Please note that, pandas take some money for their guidance.

After this, we visited the temple 3 more times to quench our thirst to see the gods. It felt satisfying to visit the temple and the gods.

Jai Jagannath.

Then, we came outside the main temple.

After exiting, we collected our shoes and phones and returned out hotel.

In the afternoon, the panda visited us with the ‘prasad’. It was a lot of food. There were gaja (a sweet made from flour and sugar syrup), rice with cinnamon, payas or rasagolla (a dessert made from milk) and some more.

It was a delight to consume the divine food. I would really recommend you to get ‘prasad’ if you visit the temple. You won’t regret it.

Our major task to visit the temple was completed.

The Puri beach:

After coming from the temple, we enjoyed in the beach.

Puri beach is probably the best beach in India for enjoying a sea bath. It is not deep and it is very safe.

The water is more or less clean. Everyone enjoys the water there.

Bikini is not allowed in here. Women can wear saree or salwar etc. without any issue.

The local people have taken up many interesting ways of living based on the tourists. You will find camera-men wandering and asking people if they need photographs.

There are people with horses and camels who will give you a ride. There are tea stalls, coconut stalls and many other things right on the beach.

Some people even keep chairs on the beach; if you sit, you need to pay.

The original language of local people is Oria. But, due to the high number of Bengali tourists, the local businesses need to become fluent in Bengali language.

In the evening, you will find a large fare on the beach. And tis fare stays all year long. People sell almost everything there, cloths, jewelry, show-pieces, souvenirs, god portraits, toys, utensils, sea-shells, conches and many more. Don’t hesitate to bargain with them to get some extra discounts.

Other than these, you will find numerous food stalls on the footpath, selling fish fries, chicken items, bhel puri, ice cream and many other things. If you have a preference for eating food with dirt, go ahead and eat these.

One thing I really like in Puri beach is the beautiful breeze. It soothes the soul. Also, an interesting thing is, no matter how long you spend inside the water, you won’t get sick. It simply shows the good weather there. However, the sea water and the sun will give you some tan.

Alongside the beach, there is a huge market. And it goes inside the streets too. Cotton towels (gaamchha) in Puri are comfortable. You can buy some. Another thing you should buy is gaja.

After wandering and exploring, we had dinner and returned the hotel.

The next day, we returned home via flight.

It was a nice trip.

Endnote:

Puri trips are always enjoyable. We stayed for only 2 days but if you want to explore, you can stay for 5-6 days.

You can visit the Konark Sun Temple, Udai Giri, Khanda Giri, Chilka Lake etc.

Anyway, don’t miss visiting the Jagannath temple. And don’t miss the sea bath. These two are the must-do attractions in Puri.

Puri Beach

That’s all for today.  I will come back with another blog another day. Till then…

Jai Jagannath

Real-Life Horror: Story 4

Prelude:

By this time, you would know that I am a fan of horror and paranormal aspects. I like to read horror and occult stuffs and listen to ghost stories when I get opportunities and time.

My mother used to live in a village and she has had a lot of horror experience. Those are delights to listen to and never get old. I like to read different types of books. But, if you ask me what type of books I have the most in my room, I would say horror and thriller.

In Real-Life Horror Story 3, I have told you a horror incident told by my mother that happened in her village.

Tonight, I will tell you another incident, told by my mother.

Bagnan, 1980s:

Bagnan is a small town in a district named Howrah. It is in West Bengal, India.

The time this incident happened is around the 1980s. And at that time, Bagnan was a very undeveloped. A pure village with no electricity and pitch road. Things started to develop there from late 2000s. So, when I was young, I have seen the village-form of the town.

Anyway, my mother’s paternal house was further inside the town. As she describes, the place was full of jungles and bamboo trees. They used to live in a clay home.

Normally, in villages, you will find many folklores and paranormal stories. People at that time were simple, god-fearing and believer in all types of things. My mother is not an exception.

She tells me many stories of her childhood. I will tell you a story tonight she told me about a local neighbour.

The horror incident with the neighbour:

In the village, there was lack of electricity and proper communication system in the earlier days. Even in the late 2000s, there used to be frequent power cuts on a regular basis. However, the situation has developed now.

The roads were also used to be muddy but gradually things have improved there. There used to be a lot of jungles, and still, there are a lot of greenery in the village.

Another thing you will find there is- ponds, there are numerous ponds throughout the whole locality. The ponds are pretty soothing for eyes. Even, in front of my mother’s paternal house, there is a small pond. I used to play beside it when I was a child.

Anyway, the time that horror incident happened, my mother was very young and the communication system was not good at all. The roads were narrow and most of the times, the people would see either jungle or field or ponds beside the path.

There are even some roads, where there are ponds on both the sides. People have to cycle carefully through such roads or else they would fall into the pond.

Ok, enough of the boring description. I am telling the story now.

This neighbor was cycling at night, returning from work. And as I told there were no proper road system at that time. So, you can understand that there was no lamppost either.

The roads used to stay dark, people would rely on moon light or cycle’s dynamo to move forward at the night.

horror cycle

And, this person was also using the dynamo light to cycle that night. Suddenly, he saw that a lady was standing on the path and waving her hands, asking him to stop.

The person thought that the lady might be asking for help. It was late enough and locality was not nearby. There were just ponds or jungles beside the path.

So, the person stopped the cycle. The lady was wearing a white and red saree (Indian ethnic dress), covering her face with veil.

One thing to mention here is that, white saree with red border is a very popular and well-known dress in Bengali culture. At least in older days, most married women would wear this simple dress.

Anyway, the guy stopped thinking some lady from a nearby locality is asking for help. The person asked the lady if she wants a lift to reach the village and the lady nodded silently.

The person asked the lady to sit behind him, on the cycle career. And the lady did so. Then the person started to paddle the cycle again.

After some time, they were crossing a path, of which there were ponds on both sides. Like, there would be 50-70 feet between the path and another piece of land after the pond.

But, suddenly the man felt that something is not letting him move forward. No matter how much he paddled, he could not move forward.

So he stopped and looked behind….

And his blood became cold like stone.

He saw that that lady was holding the cycle from behind.

She was standing beside the cycle, and her one leg was standing beside the cycle. And the other leg was on the other side of the pond. So basically, she extended her leg 50-70 feet.

…. And she told the person to come with him.

The guy was shocked at this, he understood that the lady was not someone from this world.

He had to escape.

Somehow he took the cycle from that entity’s grab and started to run.

Then, he kept cycling as fast as he could without looking behind. And after sometime he reached his village and his home.

The person fell extremely ill from that night. He told everything to his family and the incident became well known in the neighbourhood.

The guy suffered from high fever for 3 days and then he passed away. As if, that entity actually took his soul ultimately.

Endnote:

Some stories do not have an ending where things end peacefully. This incident is one such story.

That’s all for tonight, I will be back with another incident soon.

Real-Life Horror: Story 3

Prelude:

I am a fan of horror and paranormal things. I like to read occult stuffs and listen to ghost stories at night.

When I was young, I used to get little bit of scared while reading horror stories. But that did not stop me from exploring the domain of paranormal. Rather, if you ask me what type of books I have the most in my room, I would say horror and thriller.

In Real-Life Horror: Story 1 and Real-Life Horror: Story 2, I have mentioned some of my own paranormal experiences that are still inexplicable to me.

I will tell you a story tonight she told me about a local teacher. Among many stories the told me, this one is a favourite of mine.

The horror incident with the teacher:

In my mother’s village, there were 2 schools. I am not disclosing the names here. One school was primary school and another one was secondary school.

Right now, I don’t remember in which school that teacher was appointed but he was a local person and known to everyone. In village, people would normally know each other.

So, one afternoon this person was returning home.

As I mentioned before, at that time, there were lack of proper roads. Most of the paths were passing through jungles and bamboos. Like, people had to walk or cycle through narrow soil paths and on the both sides, there would be jungles. Sometimes, their would be ponds too beside the paths.

The villagers were mostly poor and no one could think of four-wheelers at that time. Cycle would indicate wealth in a family.

Anyway, the teacher was cycling through a path like I just mentioned, there were jungles on both sides.

Suddenly, he stopped cycling because he saw something unusual in front.

A bamboo tree was bent to make an arch, as if something is forcing it to stay like that. Those who have seen bamboos, those are really long and hard.

horror, bamboo path

arch bamboo

What made it more unusual to the teacher is that, he regularly crosses that road but never seen anything before.

He felt that something was wrong.

If he had to pass, he had to go under that arched bamboo.

With thinking what to do or not to do, he crossed the arch.

And almost immediately the bamboo became straight in one noisy jerk. As if someone has let it go from the other side of the road.

Being shocked, the teacher looked back.

And his blood cooled down due to horror.

There was a huge entity standing on the road, his height and width would not match that of a human being.

The entity was dark and the eyes were looking at the teacher in anger.

The teacher was baffled to see the sight and he could not scream or escape for a moment.

But within seconds, he gained some courage and sense. He knew that he had to escape.

So, somehow, the ran with his cycle. He paddled as fast as he can with the intention to reach a locality.

After some time, he reached a locality and he reached his home.

And, he fell unconscious just after entering his house.

Later after his consciousness came back, he told all these to his family members and the story spread all over the village.

That path still is there and it is quite abandoned. If there is not too much necessity, people tend to avoid that path even now.

Endnote:

There are many inexplicable things that are not seen by all. Only the person who has experienced, would know the feelings.

That’s all for tonight, I will be back with another incident soon.

Real-Life Horror: Story 2

Prelude

Horror is said to be the oldest emotion humans have been experiencing. We love to get afraid.

We love to believe that apart from our world, there is another world of paranormal entities.

Sometimes, we experience things that cannot be described with any logic. Such experiences stay in our mind and keeps us confused. We keep thinking- did it actually happen? Was that possible?

real life horror

In this post, I will mention a real-life experience that happened when I was around 12-13 years old. Actually 2 incidents, I experienced one alone. And the other was experienced by other people as well including me.

Murshidabad, West Bengal

Murshidabad is a popular historical place in West Bengal. And West Bengal is a state in India. Murshidabad was established by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan (Muslim King), who ruled the Bangla, Bihar and Orissa (at that time, Bangladesh was adjoined with India).

The reason, why Murshidabad is historically important is that, India’s last independent king ruled here. Nawab Siraj-Ud-Daulla. Siraj were to fight the British but his chief in commander, Mir Zafar betrayed him and Siraj was captured. And British East India company started to rule in Bengal.

Siraj

In Murshidabad, you’ll find many tourist spots, the royal palaces, tombs of the Nawabs, museum, mosques etc. The city is beside the river Ganges and the time when I went there (around 2006-2007), there were boat service available. We rode boats to visit one place to another.

Anyway, let’s go to the main stories now.

Horror Incident 1: The Sabji-Katra Mosque

One of the most famous tourist spots in the city is this Sabji-Katra Mosque.

Sabji means vegetables in English and Katra means market. As you can understand, the mosque was named such because when the nawabs ruled here in the 18th century, there were a markets all around the mosque.

Sabji Katra Mosque
View of Katra Masjid. Located at Murshidabad, West Bengal, India.

As you enter the small gate of the mosque, you will reach the praying ground. There are 1008 seating place in this ground. During nawab rule, people used to come here and pray ‘Namaz’.

There is no cover over this huge ground. And each of the seat for praying is just carved on the ground, means there is a thin groove between two adjacent seats. And the reason why I am describing these, because the incident happened here.

And after crossing this ground, there is the tomb of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, under this ground. You would have to climb down along stairs to reach there.

I visited with my parents and it was winter. We rented a horse cart for site seeing. The cart-driver was the guide as well and he kept telling us about the history of the place.

We entered this mosque and reached the praying ground. It was a winter morning and there were no other tourists except us. I was just checking out the place and the ground.

Suddenly, my gaze stuck on the floor…

There was a jewel lying between two seats, inside a groove.

A bright, pink jewel.

pink jewel

I was surprised to see it. I could not decide if I should take it or not.

But suddenly I realized something else, The surrounding was eerily silent.

There were no one around me as I told that there were no other tourists but what about birds? Should they not chirp? I could not hear any sound.

I could only see that my parents and the guide, who have moved far away from me. After some time, they would climb down the stairs and would disappear from my eye sight.

I could not think much. I wanted to take the jewel but the silence and seclusion seemed unbearable at that moment.

I noticed that ground and thought, let’s leave for now, I will come back and check it out.

And I ran towards my parents. The guide kept showing use the place but my mind was stuck at that jewel. I was unrestful and inattentive.

After some time, we were returning and we again reached that prayer ground and I kept gazing downwards, on the ground to find the jewel. I reached the place where I saw it but there was nothing!!

And there were no other people even at that time. I let it go because we had to leave.

I have told about this to my parents and classmates later.

Some said that I should have taken it at the first place and it might have been a blessing from the kings.

Others said that in such cases one should not take these because the jewels might be cursed.

Horror Incident 2: The Hotel

We lived in Murshidabad for 3 days. We lived in a small hotel near a popular tourist spot “Hajar Duari”.

We would woke up in the morning, go for site-seeing and return at evening.

On the first day, we stayed in a room on the ground floor.

But, in the middle of the night, we woke up suddenly…. the room was full of odor of medicine and saline. It was unbearable and we had to keep the door open.

My mother was very afraid, and she insisted that we change the room. She still believes that someone died in that room and people have buried that person under that room.

The next day, we informed the hotel manager and they gave us a room on the first floor. We could see the road and the Hajar Duari from the room. It was better than the other room.

We did not experience anything on the second night.

On the third day, we went to visit the Hajar Duari. Hajar means thousand, Duar means door. This was a palace which had 1000 doors, not all of them were real but they were built to prevent theft.

Hajar Duari museum

Hajar Duari

The palace was turned into museum and you can see a lot of ancient paintings, and things used by the rulers. It stays open till 5 or 6 pm as far I remember.

We had a guide who were showing us the things and describing the history and significance.

It is said that the parrots in Murshidabad are the reincarnation of the rulers.

There are many tales like people have seen the spirit of the Nawab Siraj-UD-Daulah, riding horse in moonlit night in front of the palace.

Anyway, we did not experience anything paranormal inside the museum, but, we noticed something after coming out.

As I told you earlier, our hotel was near this tourist spot and we could see the spot from the hotel and vice versa.

The guide was asking us where we are staying and my parents indicated towards the hotel.

But right then, we saw something eerie.

The room, we were staying, was visible clearly from the museum entrance. We could also clearly see the windows of our room.

We all (including the guide) saw that there is a figure standing on our window. It was wearing shite clothes.

We were baffled to see this, everyone was shocked for a moment.

After a few moments, the figure moved away from the window.

We were not sure what that was, it could have been a thief as well. We had to go and check fast. So we bid goodbye to the guide and rushed to the hotel room.

But the room was locked and our things were as we left them. We were more surprised.

Later, we asked the hotel staffs if anyone entered while we were gone. Because sometimes, staffs clean the room with duplicate keys. But they said that no such thing was done.

We did not experience anything after that. The next morning, we left sooner than we were supposed to as we wanted to escape the weird place.

There are so many unexplainable things that happen in our life. Our logical mind tries to convince us by saying it was a hallucination or sometimes, we try to forget it. But can we??

That’s all for now, I will come back again with another incident.

Real-Life Horror: Story 1

Introduction

Some things that we see in our own eyes, can be very unsettling. So much, that even after years, the memories do not fade away.

In this post, I will tell you a story. Actually, no, it is not a horror story, it is an incident that happened in my life in actual.

It happened when I was in class 3 or 4 (around 2003). And it happened in my primary school. I am not mentioning the name of school but it is a nice school in Kolkata.

The place where it happened

The school is not too old bot not new either. And it was not too well-maintained. Especially the bathrooms lacked cleaning and lighting.

Anyway, it being a all-boys school, no one really cared much. Those of you who have studied in all-boys school, would know the scenario.

It is a four-storied building and our class was in the ground floor. Our class and the bathroom were at the two extreme ends of the floor. So basically, if we had to go to the toilet, we had to cross a long corridor.

At the right side, there were other classes. And at the left side, where was an abandoned garden, which became a jungle due to lack of attention. The corridor lacked light as well.

The incident I am going to talk about, happened in the bathroom. So I need to tell the architecture of the toilet in brief.

After you cross the corridor, you would reach the toilet. Upon entering the toilet, there are 3 bathroom stalls in front. On the left of those, there are 2 latrines. And then again 2 more bathroom stalls. But the last two are in vertical of the other toilets. I have drawn a simple sketch here.

As you can see, the stalls 4 and 5 are in vertical with the other stalls. And as anyone enters, they won’t usually look at those last stalls. Above the stalls, there were small windows for ventilation.

During class 3 and 4, I had morning class. I used to get up at 5 am and take a public bus or rickshaw. Usually, mother would go with me to see me safely reach the school.

The actual horror experience

Coming to the actual story, one day it was a free period and we were all playing and chatting in class. I had to take a piss and so I went to the washroom. There were no one else. And I think I chose either stall 1 or 2; and started to pee.

Suddenly, my gaze fell on the stalls 4 and 5. And then my gaze fell on the window above those stalls.

And…

I was stunned.

I saw that a leg was hanging from the window.

It was a freshly cut leg, dark skinned.

A muscular leg, as if it belonged to some pehelwan (fighter).

And it was hanging from the window.

I saw it for no more than 5 seconds, which felt like an eternity at that moment. I was trying to comprehend if I am seeing the correct thing.

example of the leg in my horror experience

A chilly feeling flowed down my spine. I felt so much horror that my pissing stopped.

The only thought that was in my mind was that, I have to get out of the place.

I removed my gaze and kept my head down. Zipped up my pants and rushed out of the bathroom.

I kept running towards my class, not seeing back anymore. I wanted to see some humans, alive ones. There were no one in the corridor either, so I had to wait till I reached my class. I felt a bit safe among my classmates, making chaos among themselves.

Later, I told some of my close classmates about the incident. And they were surprised as well. But no one else experienced such incident before or after me.

My mother also knows about this, and she is a believer in supernatural things (I will tell her stories some day). So, she was rather frightened than being skeptical.

After that, for a some period, I used to not go to the toilet alone. Though, I have went to the toilet alone after that, I could not see anything suspicious. I left the school after 2 years and after that, I haven’t visited.

I still think, what was that actually? Was I hallucinating, or did I actually see something really weird?

I will never know.
