Calcutta Polo Club:

Established in 1862, Calcutta Polo Club is considered the world’s oldest polo club in existence. I recently got an opportunity to experience a day out with horses at Calcutta polo club. Which included horse riding, horse petting and feeding, Archery and photography session all along with some snacks to finish the day with.

The Horses: 

The club provides you several different plans to choose from. You can choose any plan based on your budget, timing or experience. The horses you will spend time with are retired polo or race horses. These horses performed not only national but also international tournaments during their glory times.

But don’t get fooled by the fact that these horses are retired. You will be awestruck by these horses’ training level. These horses get trained and start performing at a very young age and they get retired early as well. After retirement these horses are used for horse riding training and even for a day experience with horses.

How to enjoy in Calcutta Polo Club:

Calcutta Polo Club offers many different one-day fun plans to choose from. One can have a corporate party, family party, wedding shoot or just a simple day out with friends and family at the Club.

Price in my opinion is slightly on the higher side but based on the experience you get, It is totally worth it. I paid around 3000 INR per head for 3 hour experience but nothing to worry because the club gives you some discount based on the number of people you will be going with.

And personally speaking the more the merrier. It is one of the best places if you are planning to propose to someone or if you want something unique, different from usual pre/post wedding shoot. You can even have a birthday party at the club surrounded by these majestic beasts.

My Experience :

My day with horses started at around 4 in the evening. I was asked to wear sports shoes and carry a bottle of water (bottled water is available at the site as well, but the price will be higher than the usual market price. So, do carry your own bottle, you can refill your bottle at the site for free). First time I saw the horses, I was both ecstatic and afraid at the same time by these majestic beasts.

I realised these horses were bigger, stronger and more beautiful than the one we generally see. While riding the horse I was very afraid at the start, but we were given a coach to help us. He taught us a few quick tricks to ride a horse, he even made me jump off the horse instead of taking a podium after we finished riding.

Which was scary for sure because these horses are taller than the usual horses but the adrenaline rush throughout the horse riding session till jumping off the horse was amazing. After the horse riding session I spent some time clicking pictures with the horses, the fear was all gone.

After which we moved to archery, which was a unique experience as well. Since archery was a first time experience for me, I was skeptical of it. Since I don’t have much arm strength, I was worried that I would embarrass myself. 

But to my surprise, I not only enjoyed the whole archery session but even managed to hit a few bulls eye. Good thing about the day experience is that you will be provided with a coach, who is very polite and helpful. They will show you everything, explain every minor detail of the whole process, and take care of your safety.

After tiring myself in archery, I went to pet and feed the horses, which might sound a bit boring but was an equally fun experience. Luckily my fear was completely gone and I was completely comfortable around these beasts.

The moment they realise you have food in your hand, they all will surround you and me being a skinny short girl of 5’2” being surrounded by so many horses was definitely scary but far more fun. Because these horses are trained that they will not hurt you until and unless you try to hurt them first and they will definitely not hurt you when you get food for them.

By the time I finished feeding the horses, I was tired and hungry myself. I chose a Pizza, a pack of wafers, cold drink and sandwich (you are supposed to choose your snacks in advance when you book the day, they arrange the food according to your wish).

My day finished with a nice snack, but I stayed back a little longer to watch a few kids getting horse riding training. Which was so mesmerizing because these little kids were in complete control of a beast 10 times their size and yet they were riding it so confidently. Riding horses can bring out so much confidence in you.
